In a time where our surroundings are staying much the same, this year has been an exercise in embracing the changing seasons and taking note of the smaller details. It has been hard for everyone, sending you all love.

The BMC asked me to come up with an illustration reflecting the current discussion around climate change and our relationship to the planet. I think that it's a difficult subject to approach in many ways because of the hypocrisy, myself included, but the more people encouraged to think on these issues the better. We should be looking for changes now, large and small.
Private commission. Prints available below.
I had the pleasure of being invited to carry out a project at Banff Mountain Book and Film Festival in Alberta, Canada. It was a remarkable opportunity funded in part by the Fleck Fellowship from the Banff Centre of Arts and Creativity where the annual festival is hosted. I was given a wooden studio hut in the snowy forest in which I could work on my project, titled 'The Land that Shaped Us'. The premise of the idea was to explore how having adventures changes our relationship the landscape, from a spectator stood in awe to a participant with an intimate connection to it. I began my project with Sir Chris Bonington, who spoke of his Himalayan expeditions and his repeated attempts at Everest before summiting in 1985.

Illustration originally used for Hazel Findlay's article for Black Diamond on training the mind in rock climbing.
Illustration for Claire Carter's article 'To Abandon' published in Alpinist Magazine issue no. 57 This is my favorite of the series of illustrations I did for the article. Drawing on Claire’s lucid style of writing I wanted to reflect the connectedness of the story, the often dreamlike quality of the experience she puts across. The visual contrast of the man falling among feathers is indicative of the sense of abandonment, the conflicting lightness and terror that comes with this freedom.
Illustration for Hazel Findlay's mental training for rock climbing. Part one published on the Black Diamond website.
As part of the Make Winter Count campaign I was asked to create a large mural sized drawing to encapsulate peoples goals, plans and intentions for the winter over the course of the weekend in the Lowe Alpine bothy at Kendal Mountain Festival 2016. See below for a short film about the project...

Carborundum (coarse grit) is mixed with impasto gel and painted directly on to a perspex plate. Further detail is scratched and etched into the plate using a drypoint tool and sandpaper. Once dried the plate is then inked up, laid on the press bed with the paper and pulled through the press to create the print. I was awarded a microgrant from Yorkshire Artspace to create this series of prints, along with help from printmaker Neil Woodall. Limited edition of 20, each print is highly unique because of my messy painterly approach to printmaking! Printed on Somerset Velvet paper. Inspired by Gritstone of the Peak District.

Kendal Mountain Festival contacted Tessa to create a piece based around 2014’s theme of the first ascent of Central Buttress, Scafell. After much experimentation and numerous visits to the Lakes to draw the crag first hand, Tessa decided that she needed to capture the rock in a way that was instantly recognizable. Inspired by the iconic photo of Siegfried Herford on the great flake, the most prominent part of the climb, she felt that it would be a fitting tribute to a historic image, taken by Geroge Sansom in April 1914.
From the moment I stepped off the train I felt an incredibly strong affinity with this place, I just fell in love with it. The endless rolling mountains of eucalyptus trees only interrupted by gashes of rusty orange cliff faces.

All I ask for, at the end, is a last long resting place by the side of Innominate Tarn on Haystacks, where the water gently laps the gravely shore and the heath blooms and Pillar and Gable keep unfailing watch. A quiet place, a lonely place, I shall go to it, for the last time and be carried: someone who knew me in life will take me and empty me out of a little box and leave me there alone. And if you dear reader, should get a bit of grit in your boot as you are crossing Haystacks in the years to come, please treat it with respect. It might be me…Alfred WainwrightI like to consider the history behind places when walking through them or drawing them. Here at the summit of Haystacks was one of Wainwrights favourite places and his final resting place. Alfred Wainwright wrote and illustrated 7 volumes of guides for the Lake District. The above quote was written in the closing paragraphs of his book, Memoirs of a Fell Wanderer. Original drawing sold. Size 2m x 1.5m
